Version Effective July 1, 2013

Normally occurring events, as well as events that may occur because of current world tensions, have necessitated the preparation of this document.  Each family who has one or more students enrolled at Calvary Christian School should read this complete text. As new versions of this plan are issued, please destroy old versions and replace them with the updated version.

Please review these documents on a regular basis. It is vital that you have a clear understanding of what will occur at Calvary Christian School in the event of each type of emergency. Please keep in mind that these are guidelines only. Because every possible contingency and scenario can’t be planned for in advance, the administration of Calvary Christian School reserves the right to act, based on currently available information, in what it believes to be the best interest of its students and faculty in order to protect, secure, care for, and meet their needs until the children are delivered to their parents or other authorized individuals.

CLASSES OF EMERGENCIES

Class 1 This is the most modest level of emergency. These situations occur when there is not a direct or perceived threat to the school, its students or its faculty. In this situation, there exist the potential for damage, injury or harm to the school or school community if the administration does not act to prevent or moderate this possibility. Situations that may fall into this category include weather related events such as snow, ice, hail or tornadoes, electrical failure, water source failure, gas leaks or failure and other situations related to facilities that result in the inability of Calvary Christian School to adequately care for its students and faculty. A specific bomb threat to the facilities of Calvary Christian School is also considered within this class.

Class 2 This is a medium level of emergency. These situations occur when there is not a direct threat, but there is a perceived threat to the school, its students and faculty. In this situation, the perception of the administration that the students should be home because of the possibility of an escalating threat level will be the determining factor in the declaration of a Class 2 emergency. Situations that may fall into this category include limited acts of terrorism within or outside the immediate Washington, DC area such as occurred on September 11, 2001. Localized threats that have not reached the campuses of Calvary Christian School are also considered Class 2 emergencies.

Class 3 This is the highest and most serious level of emergency. These situations occur when there is a real, perceived and direct threat to the school, its students and its faculty. In this situation, the administration of Calvary Christian School will determine whether there is a real and imminent danger to the school, its students and its faculty. This level of threat will include chemical and biological events that are directed at or may impact the general population within the Greater Washington, DC area, Virginia and all bordering states. It will also include all nuclear events that occur within North America.

It is important to remember that while the administration of Calvary Christian School will determine a particular level of emergency, it is the parent's ultimate responsibility to determine if they want their child at school. This is true regardless of the level of emergency.
